Balayage, a French word meaning ‘to sweep’ is a method of highlighting which lightens the hair gradually from root to tip. This technique has shaken the salons from coast to coast because it achieves an ultra-natural effect by mimicing nature’s way of lightening hair. Hair should always be darker on the base of the hair shaft or the root area, rather then having light roots and dark ends. To balayage the hair, a lightening agent is painted on using a brush and paddle in a sweeping motion giving the hair colourist a bit more room to play and less methodical streaks. Foils aren’t used and the precision of the fine-tooth comb weaving in tiny streaks is no longer necessary. The thick mixture of lightener is applied onto a section of hair using one of three paint designs: singles, slants and V’s. The stylist uses a “sweeping” motion to apply lightener from thin at the roots to thicker towards the ends. This provides ultimate control over colour application, allows for less re-growth, much more colour contrast within the hair and since the process requires no heat or foils, the hair experiences minimal damage (which is key for those of us with long hair).
The result is a gorgeous sun-kissed color of various shades of blond and honey-toned hues that look as if you just spent the summer frolicking on the beach. And thus far has proven to be the most natural looking highlights ever. Balayage is more carefree than highlights because the streaks aren’t defined and a pattern isn’t developed. But because the method is less regimented, it gives the stylist much more creative freedom. The stylist works on instinct so very similar to an artist on a canvas.

Kérastase hosted a lovely evening at the Burswood Casino last night to launch their new treatment CHRONOLOGISTE. The finest haircare treatment ever created by Kérastase, inspired by the qualities of caviar.
What does it do you ask….? Chronologiste is formed from two essential parts: the restorative caviar pearls packed with active ingredients, and the ultra-rich cream masque. When blended together at the point of application they create our most technologically advanced formula to date. Hair is left incredibly soft, supple and shiny – Hair fibre is deeply nourished and strengthened – Hair integrity is preserved – Scalp is regenerated and hydrated – Use in conjunction with your existing Kérastase homecare programme.
Kérastase Chronologiste will be available in the salons July 19th.

The night of nights in the hairdressing industry was finally upon us. We all glammed up and made our way to the Exhibition Centre.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the annual Hairdressing Awards at Hair Expo are the most respected, established and longest running awards in the Australian hair industry.
Hosted by a charismatic Daniel MacPherson, we enjoyed a spectacular show by Schwarzkopf Professional before the award announcements commenced.
In an unprecedented industry achievement, Shane Henning of Sydney’s Noddys on King salon took the major accolade. Having previously won the title in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003, this latest victory makes it the fifth time he has taken the Australian Hairdresser of the Year honour.
Shane is widely regarded as a driving force in the Australian hairdressing industry and in 2008 was inducted into the Hair Expo Hall of Fame. He also won for Best Photographic Collection – judged purely on the creativity and artistic talent portrayed in his photographic collection, against every submission received during the judging period.
Marie Cain, Ashley Wuillemin and Taryn Thompson all received Judges Recognitions for their beautiful collections. For a list of all the winners from the awards, check out:

It was now time to let our hair down and enjoy the after parties that come with the Hair Expo Awards. We made our way to Kings Cross for Brad Ngata’s after party which turned out to be a highlight of the weekend! Connie from Sneaky Sound System turned it on for the crowd with her amazing solo show. While the very cool Pip Edwards worked her magic on the decks! Lot’s of drinking, dancing and good times followed until we finally crashed at our hotel!
